A charitable giving fund enables thoughtful, intentional giving. It creates space to plan your generosity, respond to emerging needs, and support the causes you care about – while the practical aspects are expertly managed and stewarded. At Greater Melbourne Foundation, we see how structured giving helps supporters turn their values into lasting impact. Combining your generosity with our local knowledge and expertise makes giving more effective, more connected, and more rewarding. One of the most meaningful aspects of having a charitable giving fund is the opportunity to reflect each year on where your generosity can have the greatest impact. The joy of giving comes not only from the act itself, but from the relationships built, the stories shared, and the confidence that your generosity is contributing to a stronger, fairer future.
Each year, our fundholders are invited to recommend the charities they wish to support or contribute to Greater Melbourne Foundation’s purpose through their charitable giving fund or community fund. This year, funding recommendations are due by 25 May. Providing your recommendations by this date allows the Foundation team to complete the necessary due diligence and administration, ensuring funds reach your chosen organisations in a timely and responsible way. You can also choose to contribute directly to the Foundation and be part of the collective efforts to create fair and inclusive Greater Melbourne. For many donors, this is more than a process. It is a time to reflect on the purpose behind their giving and the legacy they want to create for their families, their communities, and future generations. A charitable giving fund makes this possible. You can contribute when it suits you, such as when it is most tax-effective, while deciding where to give later – when you have the information and clarity to give with confidence. In this way, generosity becomes planned, informed, and deeply aligned with your values.
For some people and families, giving is a way to honour loved ones and continue the values that shaped them. Martin established the John and Pegg Fund in 2023, after the passing of his father. For Martin’s parents, supporting their community through their church, volunteering, and simple acts of kindness was important. Today, the Fund helps Martin’s family continue living these values. It helps them decide where their support will have the most impact and respond to the needs they see in their community. One of their focuses is supporting young men to thrive. Martin and his siblings are inspired by their father’s example of raising “good men.” This has driven their decision to support The Man Cave through their Fund – a preventative mental health charity for boys and young men, focused on empowering boys to become great men and create generational positive impact in their communities. Whilst the Fund’s support of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre reflects their parent’s lived values of assisting those in need. They have also chosen to contribute to Greater Melbourne Foundation’s collective work addressing housing justice, reflecting the professional interest of one of Martin’s siblings and recognising that some issues are best tackled together, through shared knowledge and coordinated action. Their story shows how a charitable giving fund can connect family values with community impact in a meaningful and lasting way.
For Paul and Paula Caine, establishing a charitable giving fund created a practical and sustainable way to support their philanthropy. But, as with many donors, the journey has become something more. As Paul explains, the phrase “to whom much is given, much is required” reflects his upbringing – a belief that those with resources have a responsibility to use them wisely and contribute positively to society. Pictured: Paul and Paula Caine Today, the Caine Foundation Fund provides a secure and sustainable way for Paul and Paula to continue their giving in retirement. Increasingly, it has also become a powerful way to connect the family across generations, as their grandchildren show growing interest in social issues and the purpose and impact of the Caine Foundation Fund. The Fund makes generosity easier for the Caine family by providing the opportunity for intergenerational connection and learning around giving, responsibility, and community.
