The change reflects the Foundation’s new focus on social justice and equity, and a renewed commitment to tackling some of Greater Melbourne’s most pressing challenges. “Greater Melbourne is a thriving, growing city, but it also faces persistent challenges,” said Chief Executive Officer Peter Walton. “Our new name signals a very exciting new chapter for the Foundation. Our new direction strengthens our commitment to the wellbeing of the entire Greater Melbourne region, with a strong focus on social justice and equity, today and for the future.” Since its establishment in 1923, the Foundation has continually adapted to meet Melbourne’s changing needs. The introduction of the Greater Melbourne Foundation name is the latest step in this journey. The new operating name will be adopted from Wednesday 15 October 2025. The Lord Mayor remains as the Foundation’s Honorary Patron, playing a key role in supporting the Foundation’s work and encouraging participation in effective community philanthropy. “This opens another fantastic chapter in the Foundation’s rich history,” said Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece. “A great community foundation, driven by the generosity and support of the community, working together to create a fairer future for all of Greater Melbourne and beyond”. Mr Walton added, “Greater Melbourne Foundation brings together the passion of supporters, the insight of communities, and our own experience to drive positive social change for today and tomorrow. “Together, we will have greater impact, so current and future generations live in a Greater Melbourne that is both fair and equitable”.
