This tragedy occurred on the first day of Hanukkah – a time that celebrates hope, resilience and the miracle of light. While that light may feel dimmed in the wake of such devastation, it cannot and will not be extinguished when we stand together. We grieve with and for our Jewish friends, who are such an integral part of our community, both here in Greater Melbourne and across Australia. We know many are feeling deeply traumatised and unsettled right now. The Greater Melbourne Foundation stands in solidarity with the Jewish Community and with the people of Sydney, and we unequivocally condemn antisemitism, hatred and violence in all its forms. Now is the time for us to come together, to support one another, and reaffirm our shared commitment to respect, inclusion and peace. With heartfelt sympathy,
Janina Gawler, Chair and Peter Walton, Chief Executive Officer Greater Melbourne Foundation
We invite you to join us in this act of hope, resilience and solidarity with Sydney's Jewish community.
While tragedy can pull us towards hatred and retribution, the strength of the Australian community is that in times of crisis we rally together to support our sisters and brothers of all faiths and backgrounds. This is fundamental to ensuring our peaceful, multicultural society.
The effects of this will be long-lasting: on survivors, first responders and our communities more broadly. Sydney Community Foundation will be coordinating grant rounds to ensure funding goes where it is needed most.
Thank you from the Sydney Community Foundation Board and Team. Please consider making a donation to the Sydney Community Foundation Bondi Beach Tragedy Appeal in this time.
